Are we doing things for the right reason?

It is so easy to get caught up in doing things for image sake. Everything to day is about how we look, wearing the most uptodate fashion with the right lable showing! So many people are watching each ones of us, and "we must keep up with the Jones" - we must have the latest gadget, the best car we can afford etc. etc..

Jesus warns us about the way we put a show on for other people, especially when that apperance is false - Jesus calls people like this hypocrites!

In Matthew chapter 6 Jesus talks about doing things to be seen by others rather than doing things to please God. some of the thinks Jesus talks about are:
  • doing good
  • giving to charity
  • prayer
  • fasting
  • priorities and values
  • work and worry
Think for a moment about your prayer life......
Maybe these were some of your thoughts:
  • yes you know God answers prayer
  • you proberly think you should pray more
  • you don't want to bring a list to God but often find that is what you do
Now think about the time when you are on your own praying......
  • What is it like?
  • How do you respond to God?
  • Where do you pray?
  • Are you reverent but relaxed?
Now consider what its like when you are in a prayer meeting.......
    • what has changed?
    • why has it changed?
God want to build strong convictions into each one of us. Read how the Message Bible puts what Pual said in:
    1 Thessalonians 4:1 (MSG)
One final word, friends. We ask you—urge is more like it—that you keep on doing what we told you to do to please God, not in a dogged religious plod, but in a living, spirited dance.

Paul is urging you and me to live a God pleasing life that is not tied up in a religious plod!
    • Is your prayer life pleasing to God, both when you are on your own and with others?
    • Is your prayer life a religious plod?
    • How do you think we should pray when we come together as the church?
